GST inclusive vs. exclusive — what's the difference?
GST exclusive means the amount you enter is the base price before tax. GST is calculated on top of it and added to get the final payable amount — this is common in B2B quotes and invoices.
GST inclusive means the amount you enter already has GST built in. The calculator works backwards to show you the base price and how much of the total is tax — this is how most retail price tags and MRPs work.
Under India's GST law, tax on an intra-state sale is split equally between CGST (collected by the central government) and SGST (collected by the state government). For inter-state sales, the full amount is charged as a single IGST.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between GST inclusive and exclusive amounts?
An exclusive amount is the price before GST — tax is added on top to arrive at the total. An inclusive amount already has GST baked in, so the base price and GST are extracted (reverse-calculated) from it. Retail price tags are usually inclusive; B2B quotations are often exclusive.
How is GST split into CGST and SGST?
For a sale within the same state, GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) — each is exactly half the total GST rate. For an inter-state sale, the full amount is charged as IGST (Integrated GST) instead.
What GST rates apply in India?
Most goods and services fall under 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% GST slabs, with some items at 0% (exempt). This calculator supports all standard slabs.
How do I calculate GST exclusive amount from an inclusive price?
Divide the inclusive amount by (1 + GST rate/100) to get the base (exclusive) amount. For example, ₹1,180 inclusive of 18% GST = ₹1,180 / 1.18 = ₹1,000 base, with ₹180 as GST.
